The WebP to PNG guide

Why a WebP file will not open

WebP is a modern image format. Many websites serve WebP because the files are smaller, so a picture saved from the web often arrives as a .webp file. Some older programs, office apps and upload forms still do not open it. Converting the file to PNG gives you a format that almost every editor, document and slide app accepts.

The picture itself does not change. The new PNG is a complete, separate file that you can keep next to the original. Keep the WebP for the web, where its smaller size helps, and use the PNG for everything else.

Keeping transparency when you convert WebP to PNG

PNG supports transparency. A WebP image with a clear background stays clear after conversion, so logos, stickers and cut-outs keep their transparent areas. This is the main reason to pick PNG over JPG, because JPG cannot store transparency and fills those areas with a colour.

Transparent images are often used in slides and designs, where a clear background lets the picture sit on any colour. Check the result on a dark and a light background before you use it. A transparent edge that looks fine on white may show a faint halo on a dark colour, so a quick check is worth the time.

Converting a batch of WebP images

Drop up to 100 WebP images on the box, choose them, or paste one with Ctrl or ⌘ + V. Each file converts at once in your browser. Download each PNG, or save all of them as one ZIP.

Want to keep editing? Open any result in CutLift with the Edit button. The conversion runs on your own device, so nothing is uploaded. It is free, with no limit on how many files you convert; a free account unlocks the downloads. Some apps and sites need a PNG for logos, icons and slide graphics, so a PNG copy saves a second conversion later.
