When to convert JPG to PNG
Convert JPG to PNG when a file must stay lossless, or when you plan to edit it again and again. JPG is a lossy format. Each time it is saved, some detail is thrown away. PNG keeps every pixel exactly, so repeated saves do not add new compression. Many people also choose PNG for screenshots, diagrams and images with sharp text, because the edges stay clean.
The conversion does not restore lost detail. A PNG made from a JPG looks exactly like the JPG it came from. It only stops further quality loss from this point on. For the best master copy, start from the original camera file or the highest quality export you have.
