05The guide

A favicon in every size

What a favicon is and where it shows

A favicon is the small icon of a website: it appears in the browser tab, in bookmarks, in search results on phones and as the shortcut icon when someone saves your site to their home screen. A site without one shows a blank page symbol, which looks unfinished.

This favicon generator turns any logo or picture into favicon.ico in one drop. The icon holds six sizes, 16, 32, 48, 64, 128 and 256 pixels, so each place that shows it can pick a sharp version instead of stretching a tiny one.

Converting PNG to ICO, and the full icon set

To convert PNG to ICO, drop the PNG and click Download. Each size inside the .ico is stored as a PNG, which every current browser and Windows reads, and a transparent background stays transparent. JPG and WebP pictures work too.

Full website icon set downloads a ZIP with favicon.ico, 16 and 32 px PNG icons, a 180 px apple-touch-icon for iPhone and iPad, 192 and 512 px icons for Android, and a text file with the four HTML lines to paste into the head of your page. Put the files in the root folder of the site.

Tips for a favicon that reads well

Start from a square logo with a simple shape: at 16 pixels, fine text and thin lines disappear. Crop to square takes the centre of a wide picture; Fit whole image keeps all of it and pads the sides with see-through space. Everything is made in your browser, so your logo is never uploaded. It is free with no watermark, and a free CutLift account unlocks the downloads.

Making the icon in the editor

If your logo needs work first, click Edit to open it in the CutLift editor. Remove its background with one click, crop it square, then use the Convert panel’s .ico and Icon set buttons, which build the same files from the edited picture.
