05The guide

The image resizing guide

Choosing a size in pixels or percent

You can resize an image by a percent, or by a size in pixels. The percent options are 25, 50, 75, 150 and 200. They are quick when you only need a smaller or larger copy. Pixels are better when a form, website or marketplace asks for an exact width and height, such as a profile picture or a product photo. Check the size rules of the place you upload to, because some ask for a fixed width only.

A pixel size tells the picture how many dots it should have. A 1920 pixel wide image is wide enough for most full-screen websites, while a 600 pixel image suits an email or a small thumbnail. Resizing changes the dimensions of the picture, not its content.

Keeping proportions or setting an exact size

With Keep proportions turned on, the width sets the height. The picture keeps its shape, so nothing looks squashed or stretched. This is the right choice for most photos.

To set an exact width and height, such as 1080 × 1080, turn the lock off and type both numbers. The picture may look stretched if the shape changes. To fill a square without distortion, crop first in the Crop and resize tool, then resize.

Making an image bigger and reducing its size

Enlarging an image cannot add detail that was not there. A 200 percent resize makes the pixels larger, so the picture can look soft. For sharper enlargements, CutLift Pro has an AI image upscaler.

Resizing lowers the number of pixels, which also lowers the file size. If you need a smaller file without changing the dimensions, use the compress image tool and choose a quality setting. Changing any option updates every file in the batch, and you can save each image in its own format or all of them as one ZIP. Before you download, check the new size against the form or site rules you are following.
