The WebP to JPG guide

When JPG is the better choice

JPG is the format that almost every phone, upload form, printer and email program accepts. Choose it when the destination is strict about formats, for example a job application portal, a school form or a shop that asks for JPG photos. If the picture has transparent areas that must stay clear, choose PNG instead.

WebP to JPG is also a good way to make a file that you can share with anyone, on any device, without worrying whether the other side can open it. For a smaller file, lower the quality in steps and watch the size shown for each image.

Choosing the quality and the background colour

The quality slider sets the balance between detail and file size. Around 85 to 92 looks the same as the original for most photos. Move it lower when you need a smaller file, and compare the result before you download.

JPG cannot store transparency. Any transparent area in the WebP file is filled with White, Black or a paper colour. White is the default. Pick the colour that suits the page or document the picture is going into. If you are unsure, white suits most forms and documents, and black suits dark slides or screens.

Converting WebP to JPG in batches
