What the passport photo maker measures
Passport offices measure your photo, they don’t just look at it. The two numbers that reject most home photos are head height, from the chin to the top of the hair, and the eye line, how far the eyes sit from the bottom edge. A US passport photo is 2 × 2 inches with a head of 25 to 35 mm; most 35 × 45 mm documents want a head of about 32 to 36 mm. The passport photo maker finds your face, measures both numbers in millimetres and frames the photo so they land inside your document’s range.
It also checks what an officer checks: one face only, facing the camera, chin level, eyes open, mouth closed, a neutral expression, even light, shoulders in frame and enough detail for the print. Each check shows a pass, a heads-up or a fail with the one thing to change.
