When to convert PNG to JPG

Convert PNG to JPG when you need a smaller file for email, an upload form, a website or a print shop. JPG is built for photographs. For a photo, a JPG is usually much smaller than the same picture saved as PNG, because JPG throws away detail that the eye is unlikely to notice. Many forms and marketplaces ask for JPG by name, so the conversion saves a trip to another program.

JPG is lossy, so every save loses a little detail. Keep your PNG master if you may edit the picture again, and convert a copy for sharing.

Choosing the quality and the background colour

The quality slider runs from 10 to 100. Around 85 to 92 looks the same as the original for most photos and is much smaller. Lower it when file size matters more than fine detail, and compare the result before you download.

JPG has no transparency, so any transparent area is filled with a solid colour. Choose White, Black or a paper colour to suit the page the picture will sit on. White is the default, and it is the right choice for most documents and websites.

Converting many PNG files at once

Drop up to 100 PNG files together. Changing the quality or the background colour updates every file at once. Each file shows its size, so you can see how much room the conversion saved. Download each JPG, or save them all as one ZIP.

The new file is drawn fresh, so camera details and GPS location in the original are not copied. Everything runs on your own device, and nothing is uploaded. There is no watermark, and a free account is all you need to download. Try a few quality settings on one picture first, then apply the best one to the batch. The original PNG is not changed, so you can always start again. Converting a copy keeps your master file safe.

07Questions

Good to know

Can I convert PNG to JPG without losing quality?

At quality 92 to 100 the JPG looks the same as the PNG to the eye. JPG always drops a little detail to save space, so keep the PNG if you need an exact copy.
